Paarl Media printing press burns down

One of Paarl Media Group's printing presses at Paarl Gravure, Montague Gardens, went up in flames around 6.45am Saturday morning, 7 February 2009. While the damage is estimated at between R400 and R550 million, according to media reports, the group says that business will continue as per usual, thanks to its “extensive backup capacity and capability”.

According to a press statement, the Paarl Media Group consists of 11 printing plants across South Africa. Commented Stephen van der Walt, CEO of the group, "We have sound backup procedures in place to cater for any unforeseen circumstances. Our comprehensive contingency plan has already been executed, and we can assure all our clients that the delivery of their work will not be affected.

"Our investment in digital technology facilitates the seamless electronic transfer of clients' material between the pre-press departments of all our plants to ensure that they can efficiently act as backup to each other. Therefore, for us it will be business as usual."

No staff member was injured in this isolated event, which only affected one of the printing presses. Experts have been assessing the exact extent of the damage since Saturday.
