There will be some new voices on the airwaves and some in different time-slots when East Coast Radio introduces a new line-up on Monday 31 May 2004. The East Coast will be waking up to a whole new team as the 'New Breakfast Show' takes to their air.
The station's new Breakfast Show will be vastly different to any show currently on South African radio. In line with international trends, the six to nine morning show will no longer be dominated by a single personality. As from Monday 31 May 2004, East Coasters can eat their breakfast, brush their teeth and drive to work, while they enjoy the interplay amongst four very different, highly charismatic personalities – Jane Linley, Mel Massyn, Makhosi Khoza and Lev David.
The man behind East Coast Radio's programming strategy, Gavin Meiring, explains the thinking behind the new show: "It's been successfully implemented by stations similar to ours overseas where there's a move away from the one-man show with content driven by a single host's opinion and perspective. There's just so much more that can be done with multiple presenters - in addition to their interaction with listeners, the hosts interaction with each other brings a whole new dimension to the on-air experience. The dynamic is similar to the one keeping viewers addicted to long-running television soap operas. We're creating something bigger than a series of isolated three-hour shows. With these four characters we hope to build a sense of continuity and give listeners characters they can relate to and follow through various experiences," says Meiring.
Dave Guselli's familiar voice will be heard earlier in the day as he takes over the 9 to 12 time-slot. He will be bringing his affable personality to the start of the 'WorkZone.' The lovely Sorisha Naidoo will be moving from her weekend show to the weekday early evening from 6 to 9pm.
There will be a dynamic new Weekend Wake Up as Lotus's Afternoon Drive DJ, Neville Pillay teams up with Thando Makhunga, currently one of East Coast Radio's Breakfast Bunch.
"We benchmark ourselves according to international trends and standards and, to stay ahead of the pack, especially in radio, we have to challenge the age-old, tried-and-tested formulas," says East Coast Radio CEO Trish Taylor.

Okay then - so if this is the international trend then surely it already is an "age-old, tried and tested formula" ??
Who are you trying to kid?!? 94.7's Rude Awakening has been running for a long time, Darren Scott's Show had a team around him, even 5's Breakfast bunch do.

With respect, I think you misunderstand -- the idea is that there is a team of four without an anchor. Before either Ilbury and Scott were at the centre, with the rest being minor characters for the anchor to bounce off. Now, there is no anchor. Think of it as the difference between the average movie with a single hero, and a Robert Altman movie, with parallel heroes and storylines. Sounds kinda exciting, actually. The old format is too boring and predictable for me. Will certainly be listening when I'm down from Joburg. Posted on 26 May 2004 06:43
I'm glad to voice my comment on this new line up issue. Firstly its a big loss to people like me to hear that Makhosi's voice will never be heard between 9and 12. I'l the M-Word for the day which he did very thoughtfully and brought some new meaning to me. But its a bonus that I'll be able to hear his voice earlier in the morning. Its good to try new things in life as many radio stations continue to have one man shows. Sorisha is very good as well in the 6-9 Pm show. PLZZ east coast keep up hte good work. OH bear in mind that I'm in cape Town for a while but with you in my heart. THANX Posted on 28 May 2004 09:59
Hi As an East Radio listener I am very disappointed and do not enjoy the new breakfast show especially Jane's out-of-breath laughter - please bring Darren back! Posted on 2 Jun 2004 11:14
