Maistry moving on to Metro FM

20 Mar 2009 17:2027 commentsBizLike
Mid-morning radio show host Kenny Maistry will be leaving 94.7 Highveld Stereo for Metro FM at the end of March 2009, it was announced late on Friday afternoon, 20 March. Mark Pilgrim will be presenting the show until a permanent presenter has been identified.

DJ Kenny Maistry
Maistry, who currently hosts the 9am - 12noon show weekdays with the popular Time Tunnel feature, has been at 94.7 for the past seven years.

“Kenny has been the driving force behind the success of Time Tunnel, which he originally launched. He has always been a pleasure to work with. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” said Ravi Naidoo, 94.7 Highveld Stereo station manager.

Commented Maistry, “The past seven years have been an awesome learning experience, plus I have grown so much as a broadcaster and a person.

“I would like to thank Ravi Naidoo and CEO Terry Volkwyn for affording me the opportunity to be part of the dynamic and professional team at 94.7 Highveld Stereo.”

Pilgrim currently presents Take 40 SA on Saturdays at 10am - 2pm, which is syndicated on sister radio station 94.5 Kfm in Cape Town.

kenny-
same old recycled crap once again, the man rocked during his time but honestly what is it that he can offer metro listeners 7yrs later? god help us if he's getting the morning slot.

metro needs a complete overhaul, from management to its on-air package.

black radio is dying a slow death with no hope of ressucitation in the horizon.

kaya fm is crap, metro is sh*t and the least said about Y the better.

time to start harnessing new talent guys!

this is an open plea to dj fresh to please save black radio from itself. you are our only hope. please ditch 5 for either metro or kaya. we need you brother!!!!!!!!!! Posted on 21 Mar 2009 14:23

Good readens to the BWT, they lost the plot. They left me uninformed unentertained and uneducated. Posted on 22 Mar 2009 11:38

old with new...-
You can't expect an untested, unproven on air talent to work.About music, Listen to today's Oldies or Adult Hits stations and compare them to what were oldies stations even into the early 1990s. The music is much different. Did you ever expect to hear Mary J Blige or George Michael on an oldies station? You do now.

People gripe a lot about urban stations but miss the point.Urban music(mostly international) serves their audience, attracts high dollar advertisers and maintains a consistent audience niche from market to market.
The same goes for A/C. Despite what you may feel, nobody turns on their radio to be educated. They want to be entertained.
So its great listening to a station with gr8 on air talent that entertains with great voices and lingo(depending on target audience)e.g 5fm gareth, fresh, sasha.heart fm lee downs.Yfm chilli m.metro fm Amon.highveld alex, patrick h,radio2000 just ice, ismail abrahams,kamza.99.5fm leko m,mzo.ecr peter g.ghfm nigel p.

old skool radio will always stand the test of time, where dj's were loved firstly for the voice and then how they entertained and music played. Posted on 22 Mar 2009 15:13

Kick Ass Kenny Maistry-
Well done Kenny Maistry , you are one of the legends of sa radio.Thank you for setting the benchmark for future radio presenters.

Kick Ass Kenny-
I totally agree ,Kenny Maistry was missed ,but I honestly feel that he should of been given the slot that Penny has,Penny needs to GO and I really mean that she has to go.This is how it should of been Thomas and the family should have been left in the morning, the 09H00 - 12H00 slot can stay the way it is including Glen and his crew could remain in their slot, but I say that Kenny should be put in Penny`s place she just talks and talks and talks .Please take Kenny and put him in Penny`s place. Respecting cultural practises-
Referring to the topic about culture that was presented on the 24th Nov.I really didn't appreciate the fact that BBK on national radio told Kenny that he must learn an African language(Zulu).BBK learning a language is personal choice by an individual, not a force. And mentioning it so strongly on radio, you are respecting his values and culture.Yes all of us are South Africans, with a right to speak which language that we choose to speak. Please in future if you feel so strongly about a topic, voice your opinion off air rather than on.Thank you! BRICK WALL-
Congratulations to KM for his return to national radio and the massive Metro platform but between the lines, it's a sad reflection on the lack of ability that radio stations have in attracting new talent. They look towards the same old same old. Metro could have given a young, fresh and creative youngster a chance at entertaining us but instead, they ask the prodigal son to return.

mafutha jams-
"The mafutha jams" worked at that time , i just don't know if it would work this time around. Radio has changed so much over the few years. Look what happen to Vusi Letswalo when he returned to metro, he did not change his strategy, still playing the same old music- Naughty by Nature and Adina Howard. I am just hoping that Kenny do something different to capture metro fm targeted listnership. Good luck Kick ass kenny. Posted on 23 Mar 2009 12:11

Well done-
Well done Kenny, it's about time. Kick ass my man!! Posted on 23 Mar 2009 12:32
Where is Fresh Talent????-
Where is fresh talent? These stations keep recycling old people. Why is there no introduction of completely new people? We all know we have to make money- its business. you drop the DJ in this station because of the drop in listenership - and then the other station takes this dropped DJ and then years later you bring the old DJ back? what is that- recycling process? Well done Metro FM-
Same crap different year, hardly suprising that Metro FM called Kenny back instead of trying out new talent or getting the weekend guys in. This is a joke, but... unfortunately these managers know that people will listen anyway, so what the hell. The solution, when you get to a slot that you don't like ...Ipod rules... On the other hand, even if you don't listen SAARF will come up with corked up figures that nobody understands how the hell they got to them. Posted on 23 Mar 2009 17:47

Adil would've hooked it up nicely...-
Ok, here's the thing, firstly don't say you weren't told, but we are going to see some surprises this week.

It happened in 2006 when Metro FM announced their line-up changes and had to retract them because some of the DJs left, in that case, it was Pabi Moloi who pulled a fast one on them after she was meant to be paired up with Paul.

NOW, Bad Boy T is not having any of this, I mean; which seasoned DJ would want to be paired up with Penny and "some guy from Durban"?

If BWT didn't work, management should've taken some responsibility towards it s failure.

There are too many political moves being made this time around and it's going to hit Sekgale on the face. He's too much of a people-pleaser.

Regurgitating old guys instead of trying out already exsisting talent within the station is bound to be met with some unpleasantness by DJs - obviously.

But in the same token, Kenny was and has been sounding tired for more than 2 years now " doing the time tunnel".

I hope Greg shows these fools how it's really done.

The magic of radio (it's 2009 - but it is STILL THEATRE OF THE MIND) is coming back and it's going to be at Kaya FM, when Greg is done, mark my words.

The less we say about YFM, the better. They fire Chilli and keep S'bu. WTF????

And now, they're proposing TV faces to do radio, it flopped the first time around, why do you think it's going to work now. If Sizwe was so hot, then 5FM would've given him a slot, but he sucked big time. Still does, worse now because there's no script.

Wait and see... Posted on 23 Mar 2009 18:26
Politics and Radio-
With SABC going through all this I think this was the safest line up they could bring (i'm not saying a working one), considering that they could have some presenters having longer contracts thus they coudn't do much shuffle as that could have been very costly and could not be justified as some wise person decided to give some presenters long contract not thinking that they could not cut it. Time will tell-
A gr8 move by Metro FM. My main concern is how do you bring someone you ditched some time ago. The same happened with the musical Doctor and they are doing the same thing yet again. I hope they won't regret the move. It is imperative that Kenny comes up with a different approach now that he will be doing breakfast. The Sunday movement with Amon doing the 3pm - 6pm slot I saw it coming a long time ago. Radio is all about raking in revenue hence the likes of Glen are still around. Honestly, Chilli did it for me instead of Glen and Unathi. To me the YFM drive time was what the afternoon slot was about. Unfortunately he has been shown the door with a similar offence to what Sbu did. However, Sbu is still running the show, goes on to show how double standards work. I mean Sbu played a song that was not on the playlist but was not fired. I think one mistake that Chilli made was comparing himself to Sbu remember with the YMag cover look at him now.

Back to Metro - I am not sure about tampering with the winning formula on Sundays removing Zondi. Hope the decision doesn't come back to haunt them. No station compared to Metro on Sundays with the Good Guys.

All the best to Metro FM and the new line up. Lets give them some time and time will tell. Well done Amon. Posted on 24 Mar 2009 11:05

Indeed-
I am a radio lover in making with all the knowledge and understanding of how radio works and can tell when I see good talent for radio. I agree with the writer, no radio station has ever beat Metro on Sundays. To put a cherry on top was the Sunday Soul Session. Everyone wants to know where it is gonna be at a particular Sunday. Metro should not have touched the Sunday line-up.

As for YFM, good riddance to Chilli M, he was very loud for the afternoon. Sbu and AK must watch their backs too. Mo is too pompous even though he's good, unlike Tholi B who is down to earth and good at the same time. Mo's attitude will put him flat on the floor and leave him jobless. Bridgette is as good as Thomas (Metro) she must leave and go work for somewhere else but not on radio. Hope YFM sees that. Posted on 25 Mar 2009 10:30

The man, his son and the donkey-
you really can never please everyone! Metro brings back old talent - they are accused of lacking in innovation and rehashing old news. YFM attempts to recruit fresh talent through the Y acedemy and they are accused of cost cutting and recruiting cheap inexpensive new talent.

The old parable about the man his son and the donkey once again rings true Posted on 24 Mar 2009 12:23
Radio Analyst
Old Basics of Radio-
Unfortunately lots of these inconsistent changes in radio are due to lack of understanding the initial fundamentals of radio. First of all, hiring jocks, as the the other commentator put it, shouldn't be about their fame - such in the case of Sizwe.

Its about 'The Passion for Radio'. There are aspiring radio jocks who mainly want to famous. There are those jocks that have deep seated passion and don't care abt fame - exactly the reason why they create the best radio while hiding behind the mic.

This should be the starting point for Segale and his cohorts when hiring. A good example is Glen Lewis - this guy has deep seated passion for radio. Having joined Metro in 1994, he still maintains it and u would hardly see him in Sunday tabloids...which begs the question. DJs @ metro came and went while still there

Its time Wilson B steps down - he has 1st joined the station while in was in primary school & now im 29. He gotta move on.

Secondly, i agree with Radio Lover, 1st its about the passion for radio, a nice voice and nice versatile skill to executive a great show.

Good examples are the following:
Sasha Martinengo (5FM)
DJ Fresh (5FM)
Bad Boy T (i still think he was wrong for Breakfast Show) he needs another type of show along with personality...)
Amon Mokoena, Alex Jay.

To mention a few. . .

Segale must use Tried and Tested measures in addition to selections looking at these issues...he will have excellent radio. Who said u need to be funny when you are in radio? Look at what happened to Phat Joe and others...its about a killer style..Wilson has made few jokes but managed to remain in radio since the 1989s

As for Mafutha Jams, i aint sure of the man but i am certain he can pull it off...

And what is this business about Capricorn FM slowly nailing itself through the coffin with complete lack of advertising and staff problems...Pay the DJs well and you wont have media leaks- Shabba. You dont have to change reconstruct the website just because two key jocks have left...remove their profiles... Posted on 24 Mar 2009 15:51

Kenny is the man-
Welcome back Kenny (Mr Mafutha Jams) to where you belong. When I first about this, I immediately remembered the days he used to kick ass at Metro between 12h00 and 15h00. I hope Kenny will be replacing the all-boring Thomas and his crew on the Breakfast Show, so that we can have a vibe and groove in the morning. Whatever the line-up will be at Metro, I hope Amon will be getting a prime time weekdays slot as well. I think Amon has proved himself during the period when Penny was on maternity leave. It wouldn't hurt to permanently put him there, even though I admire Penny on air. I know Segale will find her a better slot. Posted on 25 Mar 2009 10:13

Bring that moodswing back to Metro FM-
Hi kenny good luck bra, i remember when you used to kick ass the 12 to 15 show at Metro FM some years back, you conviencingly changed the show and sustained kwaito mood to people and especially playing funcky, urban and dance music.

Those days we never miss your show never and Mafutha jam ooh man the best ever since Metro Inception. Now i must say you are more matured and more talented.

Metro FM is the good and most best radio stations in South Africa and probably in Africa as well and very much full of talents.

Good luck and see you at Metro FM Posted on 25 Mar 2009 13:52

Sammy T also coming back...-
Rumour has it that Samuel T.T. Mundawarara is also set to make a come back.

I enjyed him doing the Top 40 back in the days but I must say, Adil has done justice to this show and everyone that stands in for him when he's away, f*cks it up.

I can't help wondeing though where they're going to place him. If Thomas is staying ( which I doubt - if he does, it won't be for long) then which slot will Sammy T be occupying?

It's anyone's guess... Posted on 25 Mar 2009 18:41

Research is key-
I am not sure if this was done when these changes were made. Kenny Maistry is not a bad DJ. In football when a new coach comes in he likes to bring his own technical team. Why did they keep BWT team bar Thomas. I just hope that they will work together with Kenny for the sake of increasing the AR's for the station. As for the mid-day team - talk about clutter. Three so called big brands all in one kraal - that is a recipe for disaster. Thomas, Leko, and Penny no ways guys. Over and above that they have Sizwe Mabena and that is a sport guy. Are they introducing Sport in the midday slot. Amon continues to be hard done by. I thought the reason he was brought to Auckland Park was as a replacement of Mr Charles Buckley or Mr Dem Jam (Eddie Zondi) clearly not. Vinny and Christos - guys these are great house music gurus. But why did they fire Nutty? Posted on 31 Mar 2009 12:24
