56 lifestyle trends for 2010

“2010 is undoubtedly the year of vuvuzelas, makarabas and sudden-death play-offs,” says Naomi Larkin, editor of House and Leisure, “but this milestone year will also offer a whole lot more, with exciting things coming up in the world of decor, design and eco-living.”

Larkin was commenting on the magazine's 2010 Trend Report, out on 15 December 2009, that lists 56 trends to look out for in the year when the country will host over 350 000 visitors to the FIFA World Cup.

The magazine's annual roundup of the ideas and products that shape South Africans' decor and lifestyle tastes includes bee-friendly gardens, taking design to the people, film adaptations of children's books, emergence of Peruvian food to the comeback of the crêpe Suzette.

“We'll fill you in on why powder coating is cool, give you the scoop on contemporary Chesterfield couches, crazy clocks and everything you have to have for your home,” Larkin says.

The trend report also has what the grand dame of fashion, Vivienne Westwood is up to; the low-down on hot colours; and the latest eco trends. “We tell you why bottled water is so last year and why fish and bees are hogging the limelight,” adds Larkin. “We've also focused on key social trends like houseboat living and couch surfing.”
