Urban organic gardens, even for flat dwellers

Home Organic started off as a weekend husband-wife hobby for Toyota engineer Andrew Donkin and his wife Karen, becoming a home organic veggie garden business in 2009. Now it is able to offer DIY Home Organic units designed for people living in urban, residential suburbs with limited space, and at least five hours of sunlight per day.

"The units are great because they are constructed to be neat, practical and manageable systems that thwart all your usual garden pests, like big bugs, birds, moles and the ever-hungry Vervet Monkey troops," explains Donkin. The kit comes with a selected veggie unit, fully installed with the soil and an in-built irrigation system. All that is need is to connect the garden hose.

He suggests starting off with something small and simple that can be built onto later. There are fully enclosed, raised container home organic gardens and simpler, raised containers units that can be placed in convenient spots in courtyards, driveways or even balconies.

He recommends starting off with the 'easy' plants like radish, carrots, beans, tomatoes, spinach and rocket. For the slightly trickier plants, buy the seedlings from the nursery. Make sure to water your plants every day until they are well established and feed them with organic fertiliser once a week.
