Have a wee dram ‘o mouth of the river

One of the world's most sought-after names in collectible single malt Islay whiskies is now available in South Africa.

Bunnahabhain, which means “mouth of the river” in Scottish Gaelic, is pronounced Bþ-na-ha-venn. The distillery is located at the isolated north-eastern tip of Islay and this famous top-drawer dram refers to the Margadale River which flows close by. This whisky is renowned for the subtlety of its flavour and fruity, floral characteristics, in marked contrast to the more pronounced intensity of most other single malts of the southern Hebridean island, off the west coast of Scotland.

Founded in 1881, the remote distillery produces three single malts - a 12-, 18- and 25-year old, all selected by master distiller Ian MacMillan, who has over 30 years' experience in malt distilling, covering all areas of Scotland.

The distillery's three speciality single malts share a gentle profile with a smooth initial palate, says MacMillan, although each is distinctively full-bodied with an enduring finish.

Each of the single malts is beautifully packaged to underscore its connoisseur appeal. The 12-year old is expected to retail for about R410 a 750ml bottle, the 18-year old for about R650 and the rarer 25-year old, at R1 700.
