Design Indaba 2007 News South Africa

Buy Design for the Indaba

The second annual Design Indaba Charity Banquet has embraced all aspects of South African design - including the fashion industry. This year, guests have the opportunity to order original outfits for the event from some of the country's top fashion designers.

The theme for this year's Charity Banquet is 'Buy Design', reflecting not only the auction aspect of the evening, but also the fact that design increasingly contributes to this country's economy.

Fittingly, the dress code is 'Quintessentially South African Formal' - please leave your Prada at home. Names such as Hip Hop, Amanda Laird Cherry and Maya Prass are on hand to conjure up that special something.

On the evening, guests will also be able to bid for the valuable time of their favourite fashionistas. The event's auction follows the usual format, but with winning bids effectively buying the talents of a designer - from fashion to interiors - on a given project.

Funds raised by the auction go directly towards design bursaries for deserving students. Last year's event raised some R138 000, with organizers expecting to build on that success in 2006.

The Design Indaba Charity Banquet takes place on 22 of February at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, and is part of the broader Design Indaba - a conference, expo and celebration of South African design and creativity.
