Vehicle exports sales down 4.8% says Naamsa

Domestic new vehicle sales fell by 4.6% to 50‚806 units year-on-year in November‚ a decline of 2‚459 vehicles from the 53‚265 units sold in November last year‚ the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) said in a statement on Monday (2 December).

The association said these figures reflected the effects of a slowing economy. Export sales also declined falling by 4,8% year-on-year.

Overall‚ out of the total reported industry sales of 50‚768 vehicles‚ about 42‚183 cars or 83% represented dealer sales‚ 8.5% represented sales to the vehicle rental industry‚ 3.2% to industry corporate fleets and 5.3% to government.

During November this year‚ a total of 34‚267 new cars were sold which represented a relatively steep decline of 2‚164 units‚ or 5.9%‚ compared with the 36‚431 new cars sold in November last year.

"Supply disruptions because of the car carrier industry and component manufacturers strikes, along with a moderation in consumer demand had probably been the main reasons for the decline in sales‚" Naamsa said.

However‚ the car rental industry once again contributed positively to the November sales figures and accounted for 12.1% of new cars sold during the month.

Domestic sales of new light commercial vehicles‚ bakkies and mini buses‚ at 13‚719 units‚ reflected a decline of 610 units‚ or 4.3% for November. This compared with the 14‚329 light commercial vehicles sold in November last year.

Sales of the medium and heavy trucks at 1‚003 units and 1‚817 units‚ respectively‚ increased by 113 units‚ or 12.7%‚ in the case of medium commercial vehicles‚ and in the case of heavy trucks by 202 units‚ or 12.5%‚ compared with the same period last year.

Industry new vehicle exports during November‚ at 27‚154‚ declined by 1‚366 units‚ or 4.8%‚ compared with the 28‚520 vehicles exported in November last year.

"The momentum of vehicle exports was expected to improve next year as export programmes pick up and this applies particularly to exports of light commercial vehicles‚ which were expected to increase substantially in the new year‚" Naamsa said.
