Every media brand's nightmare came true for The Sunday Times on Friday when Vodacom legally challenged MTN's ad in the body copy of their special supplement showcasing their annual Markinor/Sunday Times Top Brands Survey. Printed already, distributed to 450 high profile members of this community, a phat party, all systems go for Sunday - and they have to reprint. One can understand Vodacom protecting its brand trade marks and wanting nothing to mar its moment of glory at having done so well in this year's survey, particularly since MTN didn't really feature this year. But has anyone really won in this issue? Whether what MTN did was ethical, just plain cheeky or falls within the realm of advertising that 'pushes boundaries' will be hotly debated, but I think a little bit of the shine from Thursday night has diminished, tarnishing the whole industry and excellence in branding. Enjoy! Louise Marsland, Editor editor@bizcommunity.com
