Megan Hughes
I am currently the Product Development Manager at Shoprite Group (Pty) Ltd, and have been with the group for 6 years.
I am most passionate about writing and food and to create a portfolio for my work I have a food blog launching in February 2015. My dream is to move from retail to work in media or magazines as an editor or assistant editor, and would grab any oppurtunity that is presented.
I am a young hard-working female, currently living in Cape Town, South Africa. I currently work for Shoprite Checkers (The Shoprite Group is ranked as the 94th largest retailer in the world) based in South Africa, as the National Product Development Manager for the Fresh Foods department. I have been with Shoprite for six years. Over the six years I have developed just over 780 fresh products and recipes and managed a development team of six. I am also responsible for researching all local and international trends, sourcing packaging suppliers, all final supplier pricing negotiations, supplier listings, merchandising concepts, yearly planning, store profiling, category marketing and point of sale promotions, photographic food styling, catering, product approval from the buying and development departments, and managing the development team and projects.
I have a Bachelors Degree in Consumer Science: Food & Nutrition. In order to graduate with a Diploma in Consumer Science: Food & Nutrition in 2009, I was required to complete a 5 month internship (Work integrated learning program), which I did with the Shoprite Group of Companies (Pty) Ltd. The internship entailed recipe and product development in the Fresh Foods Department, mainly for the Delicatessen. Once my internship had been completed I was offered the same position as a Product developer for the Company permanently. While working I completed my Degree part-time and graduated in 2010.
I have three main career achievements that I am proud of. The first, finding placement for my internship at Shoprite and then while working my way up to Product development Manager within three years, I grew the Fresh Foods department and put together a great development team, enabling Checkers to become market competitive in the fresh convenience, bakery and delicatessen categories. Secondly, I was given the opportunity to collaborate with Tru-Cape Fruit marketing (Pty) Ltd. (Tru-Cape is the largest producer and exporter of apples and pears in South Africa) and put together, develop and style, my own Recipe book, To Good to be true, that launched in May 2011. Thirdly, I recently took part in a Food and Home entertaining Magazine Foodie feature for the July 2014 issue, Christmas in July.
I am passionate about Product development, good quality fresh products, innovation and trends and hope to continue my career with a leading and respected Company.
