I am a highly-experienced publishing and project manager with excellent business acumen, strong people skills and a well-honed ability to solve problems creatively. I have published 4 titles of my own, one of which is a photographic coffee-table book. I have also consulted on and produced business E-Books on behalf of others.
In June 2005 I founded Calm in Storm, a publishing company dedicated to enriching the lives of children through interactive books. When my publisher went out of business at the 11th hour, I decided to self-publish my first children's book, The Magic that's Ours'. It was here that my hard-won self-education in stewarding a publication from seed began. This experience obviously included liaising with designers, illustrators, printers and ultimately clients to birth this first book, which was distributed through major book retailers like Exclusive Books, specialist children's book stores and ultimately online. Due to its success, I wrote and independently published 2 follow-up books for young adults. I have also photographed, edited, compiled and published the only glossy coffee-table book on the train line between Cape Town and Simonstown, entitled Down The Line.
"With real, unmediated and grungy experiences as a growing lifestyle trend, this book may be a forerunner." Visi Magazine
I've been involved in every aspect of publishing, including budgeting and raising finance. My creative problem-solving skills were applied in this arena in particular, and through perseverance and dedication, I managed to raise corporate sponsorship to subsidise print runs for two and a half thousand of my assorted books. As an independent publisher it is my responsibility to liaise with designers, illustrators, editors, proof readers, printers, PR agencies, book-store owners and distributors, ensuring the projects run to deadline. The marketing of all books, including social network marketing, has also been my responsibility. I blog, tweet and create my own monthly newsletter -www.calminstorm.com. Due to the above-mentioned experience I have also consulted on and helped produce business books on behalf of others - both companies and individuals.
Highlights of my career include being appointed Export Sales Executive for one of the world's largest bakery equipment manufacturing companies, Macadams. Building a highly successful company from scratch was another - I founded Peninsula Film Runners with two freelance employees and grew the business into the premier courier service for upmarket designers, interior decorators, architects, and the film and photographic industry in the Cape. As Owner/Manager I had 13 staff members reporting to me, and I was responsible for the budgeting, growth, marketing, administration and day-to-day running of the company.
In short, I am a resourceful, highly determined self-starter with a wealth of experience in project management and the print/publishing environment.
