Grade 6 learners to apply for Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Scholarship
The foundation identifies, selects and invests in individuals who show potential greatness. It provides South Africa's brightest Grade 6 learners with the opportunity to shape their future.
The scholarship offers access to a tailored entrepreneurial and personal development programme for learners who demonstrate the potential to excel academically and be ambassadors of the foundation's intended profile. In order to fulfil its core purpose of developing a community of young, responsible future entrepreneurs, the scholarship is awarded to learners who have the desire to engage fully in available opportunities and includes a comprehensive financial support system.
The selection campaign will commence on 21 July 2014, whereby current (2014) Grade 6 learners will be able to apply for the scholarship and, possibly, become Allan Gray scholars once they enter high school in Grade 8 (two years later).
The selection criterion includes:
Applicants must be ambassadors for the foundation's intended profile, demonstrating the following entrepreneurial attributes:
Intellectual Imagination: enjoys being innovative and creative.
Achievement Excellence: sets high academic and non-academic standards for self
Courageous Commitment: must be courageous and determined, brave and persistent
Spirit of Significance: wants to impact others and make a difference
Personal Initiative: prepared to take action to address challenges
Academic requirements: Applicants must achieve 70% or higher in Mathematics and English in Grade 6. Applicants also require a minimum average of 70% for literacy and numeracy in the Annual National Assessments (ANA).
Applicants must be completing Grade 6 in 2014.
Applicants need to demonstrate financial need and be South African citizens.
The first step in the application process requires the learner to complete an application form. Upon the receipt of the application form, candidates who meet the necessary requirements will proceed through a series of tests at each phase of the selection process. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview, and those who qualify up to this stage will be invited to attend one of the foundation's selection camps (which is the final stage of the selection process).
