"This is the first time Massmart will play a part in this exhibition. The aims of the exhibition are perfectly aligned with its commitment to developing SMME with the objective of including them into group's supply chain," says Massmart supplier development executive, Mncane Mthunzi. "Our aim is to partner with various government institutions to obtain leverage from each other's expertise for the benefit of South Africa's SMME sector."

More than 200 suppliers, identified by Massmart and the City of Joburg's Department of Economic Development, were expected. A crucial part of the exhibition's programme was advice from a team of experienced Massmart buyers, who will educate and inform potential suppliers on how to do business with the company. They will be given technical insight on areas such as rebates and logistics management to ensure they are in a better position to do business with the group or to approach other retailers.

Massmart supplier development programme senior procurement manager, Von Stander says, "This is a great opportunity to provide market access to those suppliers who have quality products that cater to our customers' needs. Suppliers will also be considered for assistance, through the group's Supplier Development Programme."

The City of Joburg Economic Development Department Trade and Investment Promotion director, Reginald Pholo says, "This partnership is a first of its kind between the city and Massmart to assist small exporters and entrepreneurs with market access and penetration. We are working with the group so we can meet the necessary standards and requirements as well as to decrease the risk for our local and export markets."

Mthunzi concludes, "We have the potential to make a meaningful impact on the South African economy through these productive partnerships. When we do our best to enable the sustainability of our suppliers' businesses, we create an even bigger impact on our economy."
