Research in the news: Actions of nerve cells influenced by electrical fields

Nerve cells communicate with each other via direct connections called synapses. In a new study, Yale University researchers led by John Carlson showed that neurons in the fruit fly can communicate without direct connections.
The results provide experimental evidence that one neuron can influence another through an extracellular electrical field and suggests new ways to control insects that transmit human disease. The study was published 21 November 2012 in the journal Nature.
