Embedded SIM cellphone deters theft, lowers costs

Mi-Fone has announced the launch of innovative embedded SIM mobile handset, done in conjunction with an unnamed African GSM Operator. The state-of-the-art handset has a SIM card embedded at factory level, protecting the GSM carriers from people unlocking the phone, as well as enabling cost savings on expensive SIM card packaging. The phone number is also conveniently located on the box and enables efficient logistics and supply chain inventory management. Additionally the Embedded SIM initiative guarantees no more lost or stolen SIMs.

“With our embedded SIM solutions we aim to further protect our carrier partners and give them a cost effective solution for enabling even more subscriber uptake within their markets. All the work is done at the factory level hence carriers can manage their supply chain more efficiently and focus their time and resources on what they do best,” says Alpesh Patel, CEO Mi-Fone.

Established in 2008 with a focus on emerging and frontier markets in Sub Sahara Africa and India, the company's primary target is young adult mobile users who are techno-savvy on a global level, but are often left wanting due to limited access of affordable state-of-the-art mobile technology.

Its mobile phones are currently available in 15 African countries, including Ghana, Tanzania, Mauritius, DRC, Kenya, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Zambia, Madagascar and Nigeria as well as in India via a mixture of distributors, retailers and GSM operators. Its manufacturing is based in Hong Kong, China, with regional offices and authorised service centres in Nairobi, Mauritius and Johannesburg.

It aims to increase its footprint to over 25 African countries by late 2010 and to be a global brand servicing emerging markets by 2012.
