Success of collaboration

Collaboration is recognised as a key component in achieving competitive advantage and profitability; however, the latest Supply Chain Intelligence Report (SCIR) 2009 has revealed that South Africa's most successful companies are not collaborating - that is, with their competitors.

The SCIR is an annual, international and independent study into the supply chain and logistics practices of emerging economies around the world. Over 200 senior company officials from both a strategic and supply chain perspective, as well as from a diverse range of industries, took part in the South African survey.

The section of the survey which focuses on the levels and areas of collaboration companies have with their suppliers, customers and competitors uncovered drastic disparities between South Africa's most successful companies and their less successful peers.

While South Africa's top companies collaborate more than twice as much with their suppliers and customers compared to their less successful peers, they collaborate significantly less with their competitors than their peers. This is result was evident in every measure of collaboration with competitors, except on industry related matters - where competitive advantage is unlikely to be gained.
