So what's in a name? If postings on a wide range of sites around the world are anything to go by, it's all in the name - and that means quite a bit... Apple's naming of its new product the iPad has gotten everyone talking and punning. Usually we can rely on the automotive industry to come up with names that land up on the proverbial scrapheap because they don't translate well - Ford's Cortina translates as 'jalopy' in some countries and the Ford Fiera didn't go down too well in certain Latin-American countries, where "fiera" means "ugly old woman". Rolls even got it wrong in Germany with the Silver Mist, where 'mist' means manure. Apple's effort could either be a debacle or, if the aim is to get your product talked about, a marketing coup. Here are just some of the links that have some grinning, some gasping, and some groaning (and griping, naturally):
And, on a completely different note, is it just us or are Januaries normally so chock-a-block with various industry awards calls to enter, deadline reminders, deadline extensions and jury announcements? One that particularly caught our eye late last week was the
Cannes Lions 2010 call to enter, with its announcement of various new awards and categories - Grand Prix for Good, anyone?
iPad. iPeed. iPod.
