"What do agency people wear to formal functions? Usually, a t-shirt and jeans. And to a black tie function? A black t-shirt!" Thanks to Tony Koenderman for that joke at the AdReview Awards last week where a merry time was had by all at what was essentially the first social outing for the industry this year. There was much air kissing and cries of "Darlings, you look fabulous!" and variations thereof. 2007 is a fairly action-packed year with a host of key international events: the designers had their turn at Design Indaba in February, the PR industry has the World PR Festival in May, as does the research industry at the SAMRA conference, and media hacks get their chance at the World Association of Newspapers Congress in Cape Town in June. The rest of the media industry have another go towards the end of the year when the new magazine publishers awards are held jointly with a first-of-its-kind conference for the industry. And of course not forgetting the climax of the year, the Loeries, this year end-July and already the invites are coming in for a host of new events and parties. As a postscript to my No Comment last week on social media - the first visuals of the Virginia Tech shootings in the US last week were from a student (read: citizen journalist) taken on his cellphone and flighted by all networks continually: Sky, CNN, BBC, along with eyewitness accounts from students - the most powerful being the video clip emailed by the shooter himself during his rampage to the media networks. That is social media in action. Keep networking! Louise Marsland, editor, editor@bizcommunity.co

Anderson Cooper
"I think it's a good thing that there are bloggers out there watching very closely and holding people accountable. Everyone in the news should be able to hold up to that kind of scrutiny. I'm for as much transparency in the newsgathering process as possible."
