Advertising guru Reg Lascaris singled out the Internet as one of two media types to watch in 2007, as it was "growing in leaps and bounds", even in South Africa with its broadband accessibility issues. The other is mobile, where cellphones are going to hit the advertiser with a cornucopia of choices in the near future. This is not to say that other media in South Africa are stagnating, not at all. The media sector remains one of the most vibrant and Lascaris summed it up with a few simple numbers: there are 1300 different magazine titles in South Africa; 120 radio stations; 425 newspapers; and 74 TV channels, with more to come despite the fact that television viewership numbers are down, as is time spent watching television. One of the biggest influencers in media going forward is community. Find out what people are interested in - inside their communities, whether it be cultural, at work, at play or social and reach them there. And of course, be as "disruptive" as possible. It's all about the big idea, says Lascaris: "Be memorable or be wallpaper!"
Enjoy!
