The paucity of innovation at this year's Young Creatives competition one hopes is not a reflection of a general trend among young talent in the industry. As part of the judging process, yours truly and the senior creative judging panel were not impressed with the lack of original thought - in at least three instances almost identical concepts originated from students as well as the agencies. Various thinkers believe there is no such thing as an original idea left, as all ideas are contaminated from many sources, but aren't our students being taught to think outside of the box, to be "disruptive" with their work? Where was the 'wow' factor? And in cases where there was good strategic insight, it was not pushed through. As one creative head was heard to comment: "Our jobs are safe... there's no danger from any of these youngsters!"
Have a good one!
