Innovate Durban's Youth Innovation Challenge winners - YIC 2021 Awards

Innovate Durban has announced the winners of this year's Youth Innovation Challenge!

The Youth Innovation Challenge 2021 kicked off in September 2021 with an exciting workshop week supported by sustainable development goals champions and industry experts, followed by teams working on their solution and on their pitch! Institution judges and partner judges had the difficult task of choosing this year’s Youth Innovation Challenge winners.

Innovate Durban is excited to announce the following award winners:

First Place Winner

Team: Ubuntu Fibre (Team members: Muzi Mhlongo and Phumla Mnguni)

The solution they developed is an eco-friendly alternative to feminine sanitary wear and hygiene.

Second Place Winner

Team: Tagged AI (Nitasha Pillay, Jirah Moodley and Nathan Pillay)

They developed a solution to promote child safety and prevent human trafficking using NFC technology.

Third Place Winner

Team: Green Corridors (Sphesihle Msomi, Mandisa Dlamini and Aseza Sibutha)

The solution they developed is a public transport App to help promote safe use of public transport for not only everyday local users but tourists as well.

In addition to the top three there were two special categories: the Zutari Student Excellence Award and Women in Design.

The Zutari Student Excellence Award is a special award; in particular the student and group receiving this award receives it for ‘Courage in Adversity’ and for epitomising the journey of the Youth Innovation Challenge, they have displayed exponential growth during the competition since their first pitch and final presentation and technical solution and was awarded to Team Green Corridors!

The Zutari Women in Design Award was selected by facilitators across the three institutions against specific criteria including the rate of engagement, enthusiasm, enquiring mind and positive attitude as well as continued engagement on platforms, and the winner of this award was Nitasha Pillay from Team Tagged AI.

Innovate Durban is grateful for the support and partnerships with eThekwini Municipality, Adams&Adams, The Domino Foundation and Zutari. Additionally, the YIC was fortunate to have host partners University of KwaZulu-Natal, Mangosuthu University of Technology and Durban University of Technology supporting the workshop programme as well as champions and industry experts!
