SA's arms industry is
highly developed, but more investment is needed to keep SA in the technology race if it is to remain competitive. Not only can the sector be a far bigger foreign-exchange earner, but it can also be a far bigger generator of skills and jobs.
Some of us might sometimes think of the agricultural sector as one in which technology is used in farm machinery, some farm operations, and not much else. Wrong! The sector, in fact, is evermore technology "savvy" and now agriculture is
sparking the creative talents of developers.
SA has entered the war on piracy, and now there has been a
large order for an SA-designed VPS Anti-piracy device. South African company Vessel Protection Systems (VPS) has won a large order to supply commercial charterers with more than 90 anti-pirate devices invented and perfected by VPS in Cape Town.
South African Airways has plans for new investments, so the government
guarantee for SAA is "not a bail-out", or so the cash-strapped airline's annual general meeting heard last week.

As part of its 49M campaign, '49M Green Campus Movement' launched at the University of Cape Town late last week by presenting its campus event series, 'Youth & the Green Economy'. It will launch its online community via a series of campus events, campus competitions, the appointment of campus ambassadors, entry for the national eta Awards and other social media initiatives. 
WasteCon2012, Southern Africa's largest and most comprehensive waste management conference has successfully opened at the East London International Convention Centre to a just over 500 delegates and 100 exhibitors. It is hoped that ideas, knowledge and expertise will be shared on all levels of society to effectively and efficiently minimise the growing waste situation in South Africa. Wrestling with waste is not something that can be done in isolation. 
The latest rhino poaching statistics released by the Department of Environmental Affairs is a cause of serious concern. Since the beginning of the year, South Africa has lost 455 rhinos due to illegal killings. WWF-South Africa says this means more rhinos have been killed in 2012, compared to the total number killed in 2011. 
Dung beetles roll their feasts of dung away to avoid the hoards of other hungry competitors at the dung pile. But now a team of researchers from South Africa and Sweden have discovered that they also use their balls in another, rather clever way.
