#Homesewn efficiency and franchising excellence - 10 Jul 2017

By Lauren Hartzenberg, Retail Editor (@Biz_Retail)

In today's top story, the first instalment in our #Homesewn series, you'll learn how Cape Town-born outdoor apparel brand K-Way has not only made vast improvements to its production efficiency but has also played a part in addressing South Africa's unemployment crisis. I interview Bobby Fairlamb, the company's manufacturing team leader, who spearheaded K-Way's application of the lean manufacturing system, which has been instrumental in the factory's award-winning success.

Speaking of local success stories, the Franchise Association of South Africa honoured the best in South African franchising at its recent Awards for Excellence in Franchising. The annual event is the industry's way of acknowledging the franchisors and franchisees climbing the ladder of success, highlighting them as examples to those that are still growing their brands. In other top news this week, New Orleans-born Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen outlet will open its first South African doors in Sandton City this week, muscling in on territory dominated by KFC and Chicken Licken.

Meanwhile in fashion retail, Foschini has been referred to the National Consumer Tribunal for charging consumers a club fee on credit agreements and H&M has announced plans to open another six stores in SA before the end of 2017 as it extends its reach in the country.

Here's to an inspiring week!
