
The bi-annual Business and Arts South Africa (BASA)
Artstrack research study is out now, outlining the trends for 2009 in the arts and culture market in South Africa. Conducted nationally over a period of two and a half months, the key finding is that arts sponsorship has grown to nearly R360 million in 2009, more than double the 2001 figure, when the arts market was estimated at around R136 million.

In 2009, Veuve Clicquot champagne's design platform was launched in South Africa, in association with the Goodman Gallery, with the inaugural Yellow by Design contemporary art exhibition. This year's exhibition will be held at the Goodman Gallery, Arts on Main - corner Main Street and Berea, this Sunday, 31 January 2010, from 1pm to 3pm.

Spier has announced the list of 100 artists who have been chosen for the Spier Contemporary 2010, its contemporary art exhibition, which will be launched on 14 March 2010 at the Cape Town City Hall.

The work of four South African artists will be on exhibition at Studio 53 at Arts on Main in the Joburg CBD from 23 January to 13 February, 2010. They are artist Fatima Fernandes; architect and sculptor Rodney Grosskopff; painter Diana Hyslop and photographer Graeme Williams.

The Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA)'s Third Worlds: Model Cities opens at the Michaelis Gallery, Cape Town on 18 February 2010. This collaborative exhibition - built around an abstract city of Cape Town - uses fine art, architecture, language and literature to critically explore the urban landscape and how it is constructed.

[Sindy Peters] I never was a painter; my creativity unfortunately is bound to ideas rather than creating pretty pictures on a canvas. I'm in the middle of Painting by Numbers, and that's as good as it gets for me. But, luckily for me, and perhaps you too, you don't have to be a Van Gogh to enjoy Artjamming. You can create your own Starry Night and walk away glad to have done it.

Artjamming owners, Leora and Ralph Israel, have decided to open another studio at the new Cape Quarter in Cape Town. Artjamming was launched end of July 2008 in South Africa and will be opening in Gauteng next year.
