    Nigeria sees 18,870 domains registered in 2014

    According to the Nigerian Internet Registration Association (NiRA), Nigeria saw a drop in domain name purchases in late 2014. NiRA recorded, at the end of 2014, that there were only 18,870 domain names registered within Nigeria. NiRA also reported that domain renewals also saw a drop across the country.

    An additional 1,503 domain names were registered, with renewal of 820 domain names and transfer of only 106 domain names. The number of NiRA-accredited registrars remained at 47, although some applications were still in the process of being finalised.

    NiRA head, Mary Uduma, said that the target for domain name registrations had not been met in 2014, but the association witnessed a good year, with an increase in awareness of .ng domain names and domain business in Nigeria. There was a growth in the number of registrars and domain names in 2014, setting the stage for more growth.

    The final statistics of domain registrations, supplied by NiRA are as follows:

    • January: 1,425
    • February: 1,498
    • March: 2,317
    • April: 1,691
    • May: 1,408
    • June: 1,335
    • July: 1,402
    • August: 1,437
    • September: 1, 531
    • October: 1,581
    • November: 1,742
    • December: 1,503
