What now Santana?

The South African fans and SAFA board will definitely be asking Joel Santana questions as to what happened against Iceland last night (a team ranked 96th in the world, 24 places behind Bafana).
One of the questions that's on everyone's mind is: Why continue with the defensive tactics when you know they don't work? The men that made up the Bafana squad didn't grow up playing defensive football on the dirt fields, they know how to get the ball and move forward with flair. So what does Santana see that South African fans can't? I supported Santana through the Confederations Cup where Bafana held their own against the biggest names in football.

Why play Modise when you're defending? Even worse, why defend when Iceland were defending? Santana persisted with his ultra-defensive formation using his outdated two defensive midfielders, Macbeth Sibaya and Kagisho Dikgacoi.

“Obviously I am not happy with the losses, but it was a good outing for the side. It was important for my players to experience the rigours of international football as it will build their character. I am happy that I gave some players a chance away from home, and they did not disappoint,” said Santana.

Bafana Bafana are left with two matches before the end of the year.
Next month they face Japan on the 14th, and then meet Jamaica three days later in Bloemfontein.

“Both matches will be difficult, especially Japan which is the stronger of the two, but I need to win, I will go there for a win,” said Santana
