Bonga's Beats - Divalicious power

8 Apr 2009 10:46Submit a commentBizLike
Resident album reviewer Bonga Percy Vilakazi reviews three diverse and well established divas. Including the gravity defying country barbie phenomenon Dolly Parton's latest offering. And the greatest hit collection albums by both the legendary Tina Turner and Annie Lennox.
DOLLY PARTON - BACKWOODS BARBIE
I personally bought this CD because I'm such a Dolly fan. This is her first mainstream CD in 17 years, so it's quite a big deal. What many people don't realise is that Dolly has been releasing all these years. This time though, we were lucky enough to have a local distributor. Backwoods Barbie finds Dolly at her best, still stringing those country hits. It's just a pity that she isn't enjoying the airplay that she once did, but I have a feeling that this will put her right back on the charts. The songs are beautifully-crafted and well sung. She didn't pen every song, but who cares when the songs sound so good! Cologne, Jesus and Gravity, Only Dreaming and Somebody's Everything are some of the best songs. Every country music fan should have a copy of this.

TINA TURNER - THE PLATINUM COLLECTION
The Queen of Rock and Roll is back! This is a collection of her hits dating right back to the Ike and Tina days right until 2009. The album was released just after Tina announced that she would be going back on the road for another tour. So if you happen to miss the concerts, you can console yourself with this 3 disc package, featuring every single one of her hits; from Proud Mary and Private Dancer to Golden Eye and When The Heartache Is Over. There are also two brand new tracks written by Guy Roche (Madonna, Cher) I'm Ready and It Should Be A Crime.

ANNIE LENNOX - THE ANNIE LENNOX COLLECTION
With a career that has survived over 26 years, no other British vocalist has achieved as much as this diva. The voice needs no introduction. Undoubtedly one of the greatest, instantly recognisable voices of our time, this album should put Annie right back on the map where she belongs. The album features some of her biggest hits like Why, Walking on Broken Glass and No More I Love You's.
