Beacon Island Resort wins BASA award

The Beacon Island Resort has become the symbol of Plettenberg Bay and is instantly recognised the world over in pictures and postcards. Perched on the rocks and surrounded by water with the Tsitsikamma Mountains across the bay, it occupies one of the most scenic sites in the Western Cape.

This resort not only promises an unrivalled guest experience, but also focuses strongly on the environment and the communities surrounding the resort, actively contributing to a more sustainable society. To this end, the Beacon Island Resort collaborated with Site_Specfic to enhance business support for the arts. The aim of Site_Specific is to promote site specific art in Southern Africa, to increase communities' awareness and appreciation of their environment and to support and co-ordinate art and culture initiatives.

Award recognises excellence

Business and Arts South Africa (BASA), in partnership with Business Day and Anglo American, recognised their combined efforts at their annual award ceremony where Beacon Island Resort and Site_Specific received the coveted Arts and Environment Award. The award recognises and promotes excellence and innovation in the field of business support for the arts. The awards are open to all companies sponsoring arts events, projects or organisations in South Africa and to all companies sponsoring South African arts events abroad.

The award-winning project consisted of 16 artist-teams of international and national standing who were joined by members of the Boitumelo project, a crafters workshop, and 18 local artists who created work in and around the Plettenberg Bay town centre and the Kwanokuthula and New Horizon townships.

"We are delighted at receiving this award and officially being named as the Landmark for Land Art in South Africa. This is a fantastic acknowledgement of our continuous efforts to augment awareness of our environment and community," says Reinhard Visser, general manager at Tsogo Sun Beacon Island Resort.
