Feb tourist accommodation income up 19.0% y/y

Total income for the tourist accommodation industry increased by 19.0% year on year (y/y) to R2.06 billion in February after a 16.6% y/y rise in January to R1.91 billion, data from Statistics SA (Stats SA) on Monday (23 April 2012) showed.

Income from accommodation for the three months ended February 2012 increased by 18.9% compared with the three months ended February 2011.

This increase was due to an increase of 12.0% in the number of stay unit nights sold and an increase of 6.1% in the average income per stay unit night sold.

Income from accommodation in February 2012 increased by 21.4% compared with February 2011

A stay unit is the unit of accommodation available to be charged out to guests, for example a powered site in a caravan park or a room in a hotel.

The number of stay unit nights sold in February rose by 13.8% y/y after January's increase of 13.6% y/y. Stay unit nights sold refers to the total number of stay units occupied on each night during the survey period.
