All quiet at Faulty Towers

NEWSWATCH: Technical problems lead to less than perfect coverage by SABC3 of the queen's centenary river pageant, reports Screen Africa, while sport24.co.za reports that the national broadcaster has signed a deal worth R28m to cover Bafana Bafana competitive away matches.
For more:
  • Screen Africa: Lack of commentary on The River Pageant... If there's one thing the Brits can do well, it's pageantry, so Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations was a case study in how to do things properly. Unfortunately, the SABC3's coverage of the river pageant part of the celebrations was less than successful, and was apparently eventually cut short and replaced with a Frank Sinatra movie. That probably didn't cheer up viewers overmuch, either, but at least the national broadcaster did it their way...

On the only bright side, SABC3 apologised "unreservedly for the lack of commentary on yesterday's live broadcast of The River Pageant, which was part of Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations".

  • sport24.co.za: Bafana TV deal worth R28m... According to the report, the three-year agreement deals with - and we quote - "Bafana Bafana's competitive away matches on the continent...".

The use the term "competitive" might have a few people scratching their heads... Given the national team's recent somewhat less than stellar performance, "competitive" is not an adjective one might readily associate with it at the moment.

But let's be positive: here's hoping that with a new coach and the right players, BB might yet become a force to be reckoned with in the future.

The SABC is reported as saying: "The SABC has constantly strived to ensure that its loyal, sport-loving fans always get the opportunity to see their national teams in action."

    And hear them too.
