These SA-made eco-friendly firelighters are 100% natural

FireFly Biofuel is a non-toxic, eco-friendly firelighter that's made from recycled coffee, biodegradable vegetable wax, recycled wood and unrefined sugar. Made in South Africa, the product is free from all petroleum products and toxic chemicals.

The firestarters are the brainchild of Kai Casson and Mariska van der Heide who came up with the idea out of a concern for the amount of toxins that are present in the average home on an everyday basis. They began testing their innovation in a wendy house in the back garden. After months of adaptation, Casson and Van der Heide finally produced a product that met all the goals they had set - essential to which was the replacement of the petroleum ingredients with a natural equivalent.

The FireFly Biofuel firestarter is made in a doughnut shape that is said to enhance the burning time. While conventional products claim an average of 11 minutes of burning time, FireFly Biofuel has an average burning time of more than double that (25 to 30 minutes).

“In addition to being eco-friendly, Firefly Biofuel firestarters don’t leave any residual chemicals when handled and so there are no smelly hands after use,” says Orlando Luis of Brights Hardware, which currently stocks the product. “They are child and pet-friendly and are natural bug repellents - which makes them great for camping as well.”

Firefly Biofuel retails for R49,95 and is available online from Brights Hardware as well as in stores situated in Boston, Blackheath, Langebaan, Mitchells Plain, Montague Park, Plattekloof, Stikland and Uitzicht.
