The SKA's the limit for SA

The Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope (SKA) and its precursor, the MeerKAT, will create enormous opportunities and alter the image of South Africa and the continent. So says Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor.

On the taxing issue of finance, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is taking urgent steps against what he calls "significant tax avoidance schemes" in connection with the new dividends tax.

It's not surprising that companies are doing this - the dividends tax, which came into effect on 1 April this year at 15%, has pushed company tax in SA above an international norm of around 30%.

While the armed forces are not democracies and orders have to be obeyed, not debated, there's discipline... and then there's discipline - and when soldiers die or commit suicide, it's no wonder SANDF discipline is in spotlight. This comes after a woman soldier apparently committed suicide after her commanding officer allegedly humiliated her.

Technical Careers expo in October highlights opportunities
The SABC Education 'MyTomorrow' Technical Careers expo, focusing on the many trades and training programmes that school-leavers can enter will take place at Nasrec Exhibition Centre from 9-11 October 2012 between 8am and 4pm daily. The expo targets grades 8-12 students and unemployed graduates. A tour of the expo will take approximately 2½ hours, entrance is free but bookings for schools are essential. Read more >>

Gauteng accelerates spending to meet service delivery obligations
The Gauteng Provincial Government departments have spent R18bn in the first quarter of 2012, the provincial treasury said in its Revenue, Expenditure and Cash Flow Report. "This expenditure amounts to approximately 26% of the 2012/2013 provincial budget of R69.3bn," it said on Monday, adding that R6bn had been spent in the month of June alone. Read more >>
