We're last in class

So what are we going to do about it? We all know our state education system is a shambles, and now that has been confirmed after SA was rated as bottom of class in maths and science. It's yet another extremely dubious "honour" this country has earned. The question is: how will our shambolic "education" system be fixed?

And if you are in the NPO sector, it's time to be afraid, very afraid... According to
Inyathelo executive director Shelagh Gastrow, if proposed amendments affecting the BEE code go through as is, NPOs and charities could go under - and that means many thousands of children and adults currently being helped, will be affected.

Trying to benefit our exports by 'managing' the rand will not help exporters say a number of experts. In any event, one says, the market is far too large for us to influence it to any effective extent.

Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande says bankers need to be taught courses in sociology, apparently in order to develop a social consciousness about the effects of lending.

And to end, Bizcom's very own "brute in a suit", motoring editor Henrie Geyser, says the new Chevrolet Trailblazer is - just as he is...a brute in a suit.

Banks' valuations often do not reflect true market value
Much coverage in the property media has recently been given to the difficulties experienced by would-be home buyers in obtaining bonds. However, the problem is that the banks' valuations often reflect the way in which their client is rated by their criteria rather than the true market value of the property, says Gregory Senftleben, Rawson Properties residential franchisee for the Umhlanga precinct north of Durban. Why a recovering US property market bodes well for SA
[Bruce Swain] The United States has long held sway over the global economy and, as such, its welfare has had far-reaching implications for the rest of the world. Cue the sub-prime mortgage crisis in 2007, which effectively crashed the US housing market, and of which the effects are still very much in evidence, particularly in America and parts of Europe. Steady demand for rentals, but sales tend to take time
Anyone running a commercial franchise (or a conventional brokerage), primarily handling industrial property in the greater Durban area, has to accept, firstly that there is a serious shortage of land zoned for commercial use; secondly, that, having established connections with those companies that are looking for new premises, it can take time to meet all their criteria; and thirdly, that the rezoning of land in areas identified as suitable can, again, be time-consuming. Property sellers are influenced by endowment effect
Throughout the real estate agency world, agents are often asked to give price estimates for properties in their area. The thinking behind this is that, operating daily in their areas and sometimes also living there, they can be expected to know the value of properties in their precinct better than almost anyone else, says Nancy Todd, Western Cape regional sales manager for the Rawson Property Group.
