Arc radiotherapy treatments: Breakthrough in image-guided targeting of prostate tumours
Researchers in the US and Denmark have made a breakthrough in image-guided targeting of prostate tumours during arc radiotherapy treatments. In research partially supported by Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR), physicists at Stanford University (California, USA) and Aarhus University Hospital (Aarhus, Denmark) have devised a method for 'real-time' tracking of the prostate motion using Varian's On-Board Imager that shows promise in paving the way for advanced clinical treatments. Breastfeeding and better hygiene may protect against peptic ulcer bacterium infection
Young children in developing countries are infected at an early age with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which can cause peptic ulcers and stomach cancer. New findings show that children's immune responses help in fighting the bacteria. In addition, breastfeeding and better hygiene appear to protect against infection. 2009 estimates projected that in the United States alone 21 550 new cases of ovarian cancer would be diagnosed and 14 600 women would die of the disease. Often diagnosed in late stages, ovarian cancer has an asymptomatic onset and a relatively low 5-year survival rate of about 45%. Consequently investigation linked to survivorship is critical.
