There's also been more serious happenings in the last week than the advertising industry's annual blowout and congrats go to South Africa's new press ombudsman, Joe Thloloe and the newly-constituted Press Council launched last week. The council's aims include, among others, upholding the right of freedom of speech and press freedom, as guaranteed in the South African Constitution. Members of the public have been included on the council for the first time as well to ensure that in turn, the fourth estate maintains and upholds the highest standards of journalism through self-regulation by the press ombudsman and the Appeal Panel. The Appeal Panel will be headed up by Judge Ralph Zulman, due to retire from the Bloemfontein Court of Appeal. He replaces Judge Edwin King.
