This weekend, one of South Africa's unsung heroes of journalism, Joe Louw, was buried after battling cancer. Joe was a larger than life character, a humble man, and a brilliant journalist who knew how to twist prose into some of the most colourful and engaging newspaper stories I've ever read. I was privileged to work with Joe on one of the best newsrooms at the Saturday Star in the early 1990s, and I will never forget those frantic deadline-driven Thursday and Friday nights when, after a slow start to the week, we'd all be burning the midnight oil to get our stories in. Joe would be there, calm as always, with his half jack and coffee, telling stories over many Chinese takeaway dinners, dishing out advice, helping with an intro or a last minute contact. He was a good man and a great journalist and he will be missed. Hamba Kahle Joe.
