Despite having 3% of the population earning an income viable for mortgage and 10.8% earning between US$10-20 per day, the UN Habitat says about 40.3% of Africans still live in slums. Inadequate and overcrowded dwellings, mostly without clean water, electricity and proper sanitation, line the streets of major cities as the population grows, banks close their doors on the poor and corruption infests the housing sector.

Africa's economy is rising, creating jobs in cities, driving people from rural to urban areas, helping to grow its middle class but creating a serious housing crisis on the continent, which is now the world's highest urbanised region. According to a study conducted by FinScope and presented at the African Union for Housing Finance conference it was found that the continent is in serious need of housing finance.

Western Union, the multinational company specialised in money transfer, is celebrating its 160th anniversary by launching a global online network - a Facebook-linked platform meant to hunt for the most networked person in the world. JOHANNESBURG: InMobi, the independent mobile ad network, has released its April 2011 Mobile Insights Report for Africa providing insights on mobile advertising trends on the continent. Data from the report shows that InMobi now serves 4.2 billion impressions a month in Africa, up 21% from 3.5 billion in January 2011.

South Africa has emerged as the most valuable nation brand on the African continent in 2011, scoring a value of US$149.7 billion, distantly followed by Egypt (US$79.2 billion) and Nigeria (US$56 billion) in third place, while MTN is voted Africa's most valuable corporate brand, according to a UK-based Brand Finance study's findings released today, Wednesday 25 May 2011, in Johannesburg by the Brand Leadership Academy.
