[Riccardo Spagni] I had never seen an ice show before. There was that. And the lady I took with me looked breathtaking in her little black number. There was that too. So by the time I actually sat down in the Artscape's expansive Opera House, I was desperately trying to act cool and casual. Much to the chagrin of my partner, no doubt, I basically lost interest in the entire world around me within five minutes of the show starting. Cinderella on Ice is, without a doubt, unlike anything I have ever seen.

[Alan Hughes] Nicholas Ellenbogen's “Slips” is a definite winner. Although set at Newlands Cricket Ground, the play is about people and cultures, and no real sports knowledge is needed to enjoy the humour, which should appeal to all - especially South Africans.

[Riccardo Spagni] Watching a ballet - be it a contemporary or a classical ballet - is not something that appeals to all individuals. The thought of following a story line expressed only through the medium of dance, especially when it is restricted to a set of traditional movements, has about the same appeal as watching a foreign language film without subtitles. And yet...if you man up (or woman up) and go out there and watch a ballet, you find an amazing thing.

In Antony and Cleopatra, William Shakespeare, writing two centuries and a half earlier than Dickens, contrasts the passions and emotions of Rome against Alexandria (today we might say “compares the lifestyles”) by way of the love of Europe's Mark Antony and Africa's Cleopatra for each other.

2010 at the NewSpace Theatre on 44 Long Street in Cape Town, kicks off its musical season with a revival of the 1970's hit musical revue
Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. This long awaited revival of the longest running musical in South African theatre history opens for a five week season from 15th January until 13th February, 2010 and is based on the 2006 Off-Broadway show at the Zipper Theatre in New York.

[Thomas Marmalade] Great excitement when Owner and Owner's Daughter said there was a seat for me at Lord (nogaal!) Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats at the Artscape this last weekend. Actually, also some trepidation as (strictly between you and me) I'm a bit of home body and don't go out much (at least off the property, I'm out around the garden most summer nights). Fact is, last time I went out was to the vet, and I would like to pass over that pretty quickly, thank you. Owner says I cried a lot, I say that's a calumny.

Ingcwaba lendoda lise cankwe ndlela, a moving and powerful play by the Magnet Theatre, directed by GIPCA project awardee Mandla Mbothwe, will be at Artscape Cape Town from 10 to 21 February 2010. Told in isiXhosa with English subtitles this professional production explores economic migration and its impact, using traditional story-telling, rituals, song, physical theatre and multi-media.
