Ramaphosa, Mfeleng's trial to resume tomorrow
Maxwell Ramaphosa (36) and Samuel Mfeleng (36) - both from Soshanguve in Pretoria are alleged to have defrauded the department R2,1-million. The accused are out on a bail of R3000.
Ramaphosa and Mfeleng face 15 counts of fraud and 26 counts of money laundering. The former public servants are alleged to have been working as members of a syndicate in collaboration with convicted fraud physio Jurry Bonewamang Sehunoe, a physiotherapist from Rustenburg in North West.
Sehunoe has since been handed a five year suspended sentence. Ramaphosa and Mfeleng are also entangled in two other fraud cases, that are also currently on trial.
During the accused's last appearance on 5 March in a trial-within-a-trial, Magistrate Fikile Ntlati delivered a judgment that a 'disputed' statement implicating the role of Ramaphosa in the fraud matter will be accepted as admissible evidence.
Ramaphosa, through his legal representative had pointed out that he was placed under duress to draft a statement implicating him.
