Motshekga to host maths, science roundtable

PRETORIA: A solid plan of effective maths, science and technology (MST) teaching in schools is expected to be developed tomorrow when experts in these fields meet with Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.

Motshekga will lead a delegation of MST teachers and experts at a roundtable, whose objective is to strengthen the current National MST strategy in order to improve learner performance.

The department said that participating teachers were identified based on their track record of excellence in the teaching of MST, and the outstanding performance of their learners in the 2012 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.

"We were encouraged by the improvement in the performance of Grade 3 and Grade 6 learners in the 2012 Annual National Assessment and in the Grade 12 NSC examinations in mathematics. But more can still be done, hence the need for experts in this field to come together and develop a solid plan of effective MST teaching in our schools.

"The roundtable will also provide a framework for stakeholders to invest resources in the MST Plan. Other participants will be the MST Ministerial Task Team, Provincial MST Coordinators and Heads of Curriculum from all provinces," said Motshekga.
