RTD awarded Highly Commended Award from A Greener Festival
Other festivals that have received this award include Glastonbury, Coachella and Lollapalooza, and Rocking the Daisies is the only South African music festival yet to have received it. Every year, Daisies is independently eco-audited to ensure that a certain level of environmental and social policy is being implemented and that the ethos of "Play Hard, Tread Lightly" is being lived up to.
The objective for hosting the festival in an eco-friendly manner is to minimise the potential negative environmental impact of the event and simultaneously maximise the positive social and economic benefits through good resource management and awareness.
The green goals have been developed over the past few years and are a core part of implementing Rocking the Daisies in an eco-friendly way. They cover:
Procurement of goods and services,
Waste management,
Use of water across the site - this includes drinking water
Energy efficiency
Air pollution
Natural environment
Education and awareness
Economic growth
Social development
Communication
Monitoring and evaluation with an open and transparent eco-audit
Taking the above into account and some of the challenges from last year, Rocking the Daisies has put specific focus this year on waste management. Here's how:
Expanded cleaning crew for the whole festival
TrashBack - Swap garbage for a beer at one of the few TrashBack stations around the festival
The Green Parade: An official litter-picking sweep through the campsite, led by comedian Brendan Murray and Sustainable Brothers. Festgoers who want to join in can meet at the TrashBack closest to the dam on Friday and Saturday at 10am and 4.30pm, and on Sunday at 9.30am.
Tickets to Seed Experience events, booze and food vouchers for fest-goers seen to be making an active difference towards clearing litter or making a big difference and prizes for the tidiest campsites
Festgoers can pre-order a Bokashi Recycling Kit for their organic waste via www.rockingthedaisies.com
Organic waste to be collected and used by Cloof Wine Estate afterwards on the farm as compost
Improving on last year's number of recycled items (62%) and get to 75% this year.
All eco-policies are publicly available for download on via Rockingthedaisies.com/eco/ecosocial. To join The Green Parade for a shift and assist Rocking the Daisies in clearing the campsites of litter, email moc.seisiadehtgnikcor@sreetnulov.
