Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane awarded the bursaries in Mthatha.

The students come from rural, township and urban communities and include new students as well as those continuing with their studies towards a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, Biological Sciences, Agriculture (Soil Science), Agriculture (Plant Pathology), and Agricultural Engineering at the universities of Fort Hare, KwaZulu-Natal, Pretoria and Free State.

Department spokesman Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha said the decision to award the bursaries was in line with Qoboshiyane's call to young people to grab opportunities within the agricultural sciences field.

Sicwetsha said at the moment there were more veterinary surgeons from Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries working in South Africa than its own citizens.
