The annual AdVantage ADmag Awards were awarded to consumer and custom magazine editors at the vibrant Moyo restaurant, Zoo Lake, in Johannesburg yesterday, Thursday, 7 May 2009, including an inaugural Lifetime Achiever Award which went to Jane Raphaely and the new AdVantage/Bizcommunity.com Innovative Digital Publishing Award to www.yourparenting.co.za.

The occasion was also a preview of the new AdVantage magazine design, content plan and masthead (the May 2009 issue), which rolls off the presses this week. In the words of industry doyenne, Jane Raphaely, yesterday, the redesign and repositioning of AdVantage has “set benchmarks” in magazine publishing in South Africa and for print.

The AdVantage ADmag Awards, an accolade for magazines in the consumer and custom magazine category in South Africa, recognise the editorial skill of the editors in steering their magazine brands to publishing success. The emphasis is on editorial strategy, content, innovation and excellence.

Judging took place in March over two days. Ninety one magazines entered the 18 print magazine categories. There were 15 entrants in the new ADmags Innovative Digital Publishing award, in association with Bizcommunity.com, to recognise the publisher which has successfully launched an online edition of the magazine title. Factors such as navigation, design, content focus, interactivity and reach were taken into consideration during the voting procedure.

AdVantage's new editor, Louise Marsland, congratulated all the ADmag winners which demonstrated the high standards of magazine print publishing in South Africa, and paid tribute to her team as well as Tip Publishing, which conceptualised the redesign of AdVantage.

What the judges said: “Jane Raphaely has consistently pushed the boundaries in publishing, standing up for what she believes in. What a load of bollocks-
Perhaps one should look at the quality of the paper, covers design etc of these magazines and realise a number of these titles are slowing falling to pieces! How could Media24 win publisher of the year when they have made countless staff redundant, won't give current hard-working staff contracts and salary levels are very sad?
You have to wonder who the panel of experts awarding these are? Truly amazing when titles such as Sports Illustrated cannot spell world famous sports stars names correctly.

Another amusing and sad awards show! Posted on 8 May 2009 17:44
Pathetic-
So few magazines entered, the submission date was changed and titles were contacted to 'please participate!!!"

Oh how sad! Posted on 10 May 2009 21:18
Sad-
Once again not a true reflection of the quality publications the smaller niche market is producing!!! Posted on 11 May 2009 14:41
Magazine lover
I smell a rat!-
The ADmag awards have become one big farce. Media 24 and its subsidiaries are clearly given an ADvantage. There are other magazines in these areas that are far better than the ones that were "awarded". Please stop this mockery of the SA mag industry. If this is a true reflection of outstanding achievement in this industry, we should hang our heads in shame. One can only hope that clients are not mislead by these so called achievements, and will be able to judge the magazines by their true worth. Posted on 12 May 2009 12:55
Louise Marsland
The Facts-
91 magazines entered the ADmag Awards for consumer and custom magazines, not an insignificant number in our opinion. There are no entry fees for the ADmag Awards, nor are winners charged for attending the awards ceremony. Apart from advertising banners on Bizcommunity, all publishers are also sent a reminder before the judging closes, as common courtesy. As is the norm to encourage entries timeously, the deadline is extended, also, as is usual with most awards in our industry. As a trade magazine with a proud history of independence, AdVantage uses this opportunity to acknowledge those editors and publications which have met their stated vision and add value to their readership, among other criteria. We believe in adding value to our industry, as any trade magazine should. Judging is strict and the 15 judges were drawn from the senior echelon of the marketing communications industry, including key marketers and media directors – their names are all in the latest issue of AdVantage, May 2009. Sincere congratulations to all the winners – and for those who didn’t make it, good luck for next year! For any other clarification, please contact me personally, on louise@advantagemagazine.co.za, we welcome constructive input. Louise Marsland, editor-in-chief: AdVantage Posted on 14 May 2009 14:34
why not name names?-
if you feel there are more deserving winners tell us who and why. Posted on 12 May 2009 13:08
Rubbish-
This is crap!! Posted on 12 May 2009 14:31
Here is a clue-
'Your Pregnancy' gets Silver.
Distribution drops from 34,229 to 22,526 and they get rewarded for what? Customer retention? Posted on 14 May 2009 01:28
er,-
it's because it went monthly. get your facts straight. Posted on 14 May 2009 08:46
okaaaay...-
So the website says they have a print run of 46 000, and they sell 22 000, where do the rest go? Perhaps your insight could help....? Posted on 14 May 2009 09:25
Er.....-
no, I don't buy that. If I was a loyal reader, and the magazine I enjoyed, bought and read, came out alternate monthly, then became monthly, I would surely buy it every month. So, if 34 000 people bought it every second month, why would said same readers not get the magazine the following month....? Posted on 14 May 2009 09:30
what exactly-
are the magazines judged on? Posted on 14 May 2009 10:17
well done-
Congrats Media24. Great company, good people and the best titles by far. Posted on 13 May 2009 12:19
What's circulation got to do with it?-
What exactly is the problem with Your Pregnancy winning silver? Is it because their circulation is not high enough for you? The AdMags aren't judged on that which is actually fair I think, it judges based on content. Circulation and distribution go hand in hand so if sales drop, it's usually because the magazine is not freely available in certain places, it's not an indication that the mag is a failure.
I don't agree with Fit Preg winning, they win every year and it's actually quite a flimsy pregnancy read but that's how it goes. But hey if you want to talk unfair let's talk about how Cosmo and Assoc Mags are always lauded although Cosmo is essentially a regurgitation of the same things, issue after issue. Let's talk about how mags like Clicks Clubcard, Jet and Edgars get an unfair advantage in terms of "circulation" when they are actually distributing a free publication to their own customers. The media playing field is never even. Posted on 14 May 2009 11:00
Ah - publishing-
you've got to love this industry :)

Congratulations to the winners! Posted on 14 May 2009 13:53
