As part of its 2010-focused tourism marketing campaign “Beyond the 90 Minutes”, Cape Town and the Western Cape's destination marketing organisation Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU) has announced the “Beyond the 90 Minutes” Great Soccer Fan Competition.
Merely black and white is not an option. “Tame” and “timid” do not feature in their vocabularies. In short, they don't do mediocre. That is what you call the Soccer Fan: “wild”, “crazy”, “loud” and “multi-colour” are the codes they live by. These are also the extreme qualities that could win them the title of “Great Soccer Fan”, plus some serious 2010 travel fun in Cape Town and the Western Cape to the value of R50 000.

South African football fans are known for their outrageous, fun and colourfully decorated costumes and accessories worn at matches to show support for their favourite team. Football fans from other countries attending the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa are also expected to come all decked out in support of their national sides.

Looking for photos

CTRU is looking for the liveliest, most inspired and colourful pictures of fans at soccer matches from around the world. All they have to do is post their best photo on the “Beyond the 90 Minutes” Flickr group at www.flickr.com before 31 October 2009. Not only do they stand the chance to win a Cape Town and Western Cape 2010 travel package worth R50 000 including accommodation and meals, but also a special, limited edition makarapa (a decorated miners' helmet unique to South African football fans.

Revamped website

As part of the Tourism Month roll-out, the new-look-and-feel website of the “Beyond the 90 Minutes” campaign has also just gone live with profiles of local storytellers, YouTube clips of fan ambassadors on road trips in Cape Town and the Western Cape, and special travel offers for 2010 (go to www.tourismcapetown.co.za).

The “Beyond the 90 Minutes” campaign aims to inspire 2010 visitors to go beyond the 90 minutes of the football game, and explore as much of travel destination Cape Town and the Western Cape as they can before, between and after matches.

Themed itineraries

This they can do by following one or more of the campaign's six themed travel itineraries: Score an Adrenaline Hat Trick!; Cheer a Killer Pass On and Off the Field; When your Craving Demands more than a Burger; Take in a bit of Cape Culture as your Team goes for Glory; When the Sound of the Vuvuzela Starts Getting to You; and, Living it up when the Final Whistle Blows.

To enter the “Beyond the 90 Minutes” Great Soccer Fan Competition, football enthusiasts can go to www.tourismcapetown.co.za - ‘kick on “Beyond the 90 Minutes” and then on “Competitions”, or email .
