Santana says goodbye

20 Oct 2009 11:07Submit a commentBizLike
After a poor record as Bafana coach, Joel Santana's run finally came to an abrupt end last night when SAFA relieved him of his national duties
So what now for our national team; two major coaches in the space of two years does not build a stable team now does it? SA failed to qualify for the 2010 African Nations Cup and, on top of that, the latest game results stand at eight defeats in nine matches.

The only thing stable about the national soccer team is that it's unstable. Santana's assistants will be taking over as caretakers for now until someone - actually anyone right now - is found. South African soccer can't get any worse than it is right now. And all this drama is happening with the World Cup less than eight months away.

Now the conundrum is, who's going to take over? Is South Africa ready to spend another R30 million on a coach or do we take a local coach? Clive Barker stands a chance as he was one of the best coaches South African football has seen and at least he has the African Nations Cup under his belt. What about Gordon Igesund, known for his ability to transform the lowest ( yes I said it ) to top-of-the-league winners?

Bafana Bafana is in desperate need of a solid coach and, with all the drama and expectation in the boardroom, not many want to apply. Let's hope for the best, and hope that if this problem is not sorted out, that the organisation of the World Cup outshines the rest.
