Ten years of SA College for Tourism in 2010

2 Feb 2010 13:38Submit a commentBizLike
The 10th anniversary of the SA College for Tourism will coincide with the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This is a coincidence that the college believes to be a happy one as tourism and sport go hand in hand.

2009 graduates
The SA College for Tourism, which is located in Graaff Reinet trains young rural and disadvantaged women from trans-frontier conservation areas, also called peace parks, in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region in hospitality skills.

Andre Kilian, executive director of the SA College for Tourism said: “We are very excited to be sharing our anniversary with 2010 FIFA World Cup as tourism and sports go hand in hand. We are looking forward to hosting tourists and having our students impress them with their hospitality skills.”

Largest donation ever

According to Kilian, the SA College for Tourism has a lot to celebrate this year. “Not only did we receive the largest single monetary donation ever, in the amount of R8.46 million from South Africa's National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF), we also received the highest score ever awarded to a training institution during a 2009 audit by the South African Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Education and Training Authority.”

Boost to SA tourism

Sershan Naidoo, divisional manager: beneficiary and player relations and media liaison at the National Lotteries Board, was extremely positive about the level of support the NLDTF will be giving the college and the reasons for that support. “The NLDTF supports skills development training and recognises the vital importance of the environment and tourism sector's contribution to the future of South Africa. The National Lotteries Board is especially pleased that the funding will take the college into 2010, a year that marks the 10th anniversary of the college and a year that will bring a welcome boost to South Africa's tourism industry as we host the 2010 FIFA World Cup.”

The donation will ensure that students from South Africa will have all their course fees and accommodation paid for over the next three years. It will also will give them an opportunity to start a career in the hospitality industry and possibly to run their own businesses, especially during 2010.
