The Songs at Erin Hall, Cape Town

Through the ages many well-known (and lesser known) arias have been re-branded by their content, lovingly referred to as a "song". A good example comes from Jacques Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann where the doll, Olympia, comes to life and sings about the birds (Les Oiseaux dans la Charmille). This fantastic coloratura aria later became known as The Doll Song.

The Songs explore similar arias and also some lieder connected to a person, e.g. Ellen's Gesang (Schubert's well-known Ave Maria), the Mignon Lieder (a figure in Goethe's masterpiece Wilhelmeister and interpreted by many composers over the centuries) and the famous, coloratura extravaganza Glitter and be Gay by Bernstein, also known as Cunegonde's Jewel Song.

This concert promises to cater for a wide variety of musical tastes - it is a balanced and entertaining variety of art song, opera and operetta with some of the most difficult coloratura soprano repertoire included. The programme also showcases the famous Widmung - the first of 26 songs that form part of Myrthen, a song cycle by Schumann, which was later arranged for virtuoso piano by Liszt), the Jewel Song from Gounod's opera Faust and other works by composers such as Puccini, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and Bernstein.
