House Inc, a graphic exhibition

As Jonathan Munnik's debut solo show, UCA GALLERY presents house ink. - an exhibition that takes a look into Munnik's quirkily invented voyeuristic graphic worlds and their incorporation into 3D installation.
Munnik cites his main inspiration from 1950's graphic novels and house ink. certainly reflects that signature flatness of early comic-book styles - we refer to it as Munnik's stamp-style.

Munnik has developed his own original trademark style of pop graphic-novelesque works onto vinyl or Perspex. Munnik digitally illustrates his prints onto digital tablet - pushing him ahead of the game in art technologies.

He deliberately works with an idiosyncratic, lighthearted thoughtfulness and attitude, initiating escapes into non-seriousness. Munnik invents scenarios that display tongue-in-cheek takes on our ‘normally mundane' existence that simultaneously leave traces of a sinister ambiguity.

Fascination with bright and arbitrary colours

The works reflect a certain point in time for the artist where he illustrates ventures into private spaces. They flaunt his fascination with the arbitrary - in his worlds bright objects and characters are bounced off muted-coloured backgrounds. Munnik consequently illustrates how a space becomes re-interpreted through the mind and experience of the character that occupies that space.

house ink. is a show of deliberately manufactured once-offs that plays into the commercial game of the high art world - where exclusivity sells. It is sure to be a distinctive show of pop-flavour.

house ink. will open on the 21st of October and will run until the 13th of November 2009.

Venue: UCA GALLERY, 46 Lower Main Road, Observatory, Cape Town.
Dates: 21 October - 13 November 2009.
Opening: Wednesday, 21 October at 6pm
