The university took 18 accolades, including the coveted Severus Cerff Award for outstanding performance among practitioners in higher and further education, at the annual Marketing, Advancement and Communication in Education Excellence Awards in Sun City last week.

NMMU deputy communication director Debbie Derry said it was gratifying to know that the university could compete at the highest level against universities with years and years of experience.

"We are only 10 years old. This gives us reason to celebrate. I think our future is very bright. So yes, we'll definitely be working hard keep the momentum going to position NMMU as one of the finest universities in the country, and even beyond.

Striving for excellence

"One of NMMU's six values is excellence; another is taking responsibility. Our department strives for excellence, so it is our responsibility to take responsibility for this and for benchmarking ourselves against other institutions."

She said the recognition meant that NMMU could hold its head high in terms of marketing, communication and branding.

"We've received a number of requests from other institutions of higher education and training to visit us and learn from what we are doing in terms of our publications, social media, mobile apps, YouTube site and campaigns. Personally, it means we're doing something right and something we can be proud of."

The 18 awards included the top award, eight excellence awards and nine merit awards for work in promoting the university via various platforms.
