Ask any schoolgirl about the highlight of her school years and she'll undoubtedly tell you it's the matric farewell. From the time girls enter matric, many hours are spent planning what they'll wear to what's for many the most important event of their lives before their wedding.
Sadly, for many girls, attending the matric farewell is not an option. Financial constraints means life is a daily struggle, so there's no money for eveningwear and attending the matric farewell remains an unrealised dream.
That's where The Princess Project comes in. An initiative started by former Miss South Africa Jo-Ann Strauss, The Princess Project collects eveningwear to donate to underprivileged girls so they don't have to miss the matric farewell.
"I came up with the idea of The Princess Project when I realised how many evening dresses I had that I would probably never wear again and how someone else could benefit from them," said Strauss, who encouraged her celebrity friends to give away dresses they'd worn to one or two high-profile events and wouldn't be able to wear again. "I know how much it is appreciated when women give away dresses that are just taking up space in their cupboards. I went to my matric farewell in a 'previously loved' evening dress that I'd bought with my mum from a second-hand store."
Dresses and accessories can be dropped at the Sandton City management offices in the banking mall or at the information kiosk in Sandton City's Fountain Court, by no later than 28 September, 2012.
